I don’t know what happened. I just came up the middle. I knew I was going to block that one. It was mine.

THE WAGNER FACTOR

A Steelers 11th-round selection out of Western Illinois University in the 1971 NFL draft, defensive back Mike Wagner played his entire career with Pittsburgh (1971–1980). The 6’1” and 210-pound safety started as a Steelers rookie and never looked back.

In 1973 he led the NFL in interceptions with eight and hauled in 36 over his 10-year career for a total of 491 return yards. He also recovered 12 fumbles for 93 yards.

A two-time Pro Bowl player—1976 and 1977, not the year he led the NFL in pass picks, you’ll note—Wagner was a better-than-average defensive back who brought poise, quiet leadership, and demonstrative pass-stealing ability to the game, an essential piece of the Steel Curtain defense.

Along the way he played in four Super Bowls, all wins.
